This is especially important for patients who cannot tolerate x-rays well, pediatric patients, pregnant patients, special needs patients, and for patients who are concerned about radiation (e.g. recent history of radiation therapy). This very small instrument, called CariVu, is essentially a camera that uses a very bright light to “transilluminate” the tooth. Tooth enamel appears transparent; anything that is porous (e.g. a cavity or a fracture) traps the light and appears dark. It is *that *simple!
